What is Generative Engine Optimisation?

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the evolution of SEO in an AI first search world.

Sometimes referred to as AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation), instead of chasing rankings & traffic in traditional search results, GEO focuses on making sure content is cited, surfaced, and prioritised by generative tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google Gemini when they respond to user searches, known as ‘prompts’.

What is a Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) or AI search agency?

A GEO or AI SEO agency is a new breed of digital marketing agency specialising in AI search optimisation. Similar to a SEO agency, but focusing on visibility, traffic and results from tools like ChatGPT. FirstMotion is one of the only Generative Engine Optimisation/Answer Engine Optimisation agencies working exclusively with B2B software companies, but also working across ‘traditional’ SEO as well.

Is SEO dead?

Absolutely not. We don’t believe SEO is dead, nor do we believe that any clients should have to make a choice between SEO or GEO/AEO. It’s not about choosing one or the other – it’s about considering the full search landscape, including AI tools, and adjusting a strategy if needed.

Do you also deliver 'traditional SEO'?

Yes, we’re building FirstMotion around an AI first proposition, but we do not believe it’s a choice between one or the other – SEO and AI Search have to be considered side by side. For some clients there is nothing special that we have to do to drive visibility inside AI search – all the typical approaches to SEO remain the same. But for others there are opportunities unique to AI platforms.

Part of our early audience intelligence work is understanding buyer behaviour, and the AI tools that may be most likely to be used, based on demographic and company data. B2B buyers are using AI tools as buyer enablement co-pilots – not just to find software, but also to help them make decisions as the buyer journey progresses.

What types of prompts should B2B brands aim to appear in?

Generative Engine Optimisation in a B2B context means mapping prompts (AI based searches) on to the buyer journey. It relies on a deep audience understanding, and carefully taking SEO keywords and translating them into AI prompts.
